As a dentist would tell you, root canal involves the removal of the decayed part of the tooth and sealing it to prevent further problems. The term “root” canal is due to the fact that the damage has gone down to the root of the tooth and it needs to be repaired deep inside the tooth.
Like other medical procedures, however, someone who has recently undergone a root canal won’t immediately feel great. In fact, they may feel some slight discomfort days after. A dentist does not usually prescribe prescription pain relievers, but there are plenty of relief remedies you can choose.
Soreness
Because a tooth is sick when this procedure is completed, it takes some time to recover. The tissues and surrounding area will be inflamed and sore for up to a week afterward. It is not uncommon for a dentist to put a patient on antibiotics as a precaution.
Since the tooth was decayed, there are plenty of bacteria floating around the mouth. The antibiotics will prevent bacteria from building up and causing further issues. Additionally, after a procedure where the dentist has to cut around the gums, it prevents any new infections from occurring. Painkillers are almost always needed due to the invasive procedure.
Avoid These Habits
While the root canal area is healing, there are certain foods and habits that should be avoided. Things like smoking, sucking through a straw, and chewing on hard foods can cause damage to the tooth. The tooth may be sensitive for a while, and you might be uncomfortable with both hot and cold sensations. Things like nuts, chips, toffee, and other hard substances can cause great discomfort and even chip the tooth.
Get a Crown
A crown is a great option for those who want additional protection after their root canal treatment. A crown is a strong cap that goes over the surface of the tooth to prevent further damage. Talking with your dentist can help you decide if a crown is necessary for your situation.
