Dental implants are the best remedy for a missing tooth. As the implant consists of a metal screw actually implanted inside your jaw, you’ll need to go through a surgical procedure before the dentist adds a cap to the top of that implant. While your dentist will give you some recommendations as to what to do and not do, you may want to find out more about how to prepare for your surgery ahead of time.
Before Your Surgery
There are a number of medications that you should stop taking five to seven days before your surgery, including aspirin, blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medications, plus those you take without a prescription. Make sure your dentist knows any medications that you currently take and follow all recommendations regarding when to discontinue the use of those drugs. You should also avoid eating or drinking anything at least 12 hours before your appointment. Most dentists require that you have your last meal before midnight the night before your surgery.
During the Surgery
There is a small chance that you might have an allergic reaction to the metal used in your implant, especially if you have allergies or sensitivities to certain metals. Make sure that your dentist knows about any allergies that you have. Most patients experience little to no reactions during the procedure itself. Your doctor will likely give you a local anesthetic that numbs your entire mouth but leaves you feeling awake and alert. Some patients have a mild reaction to the anesthetic that leaves them feeling numb and/or tired for several hours after getting their dental implants.
Feel More Relaxed
Feeling more relaxed before your dental implant surgery is as easy as talking with your doctor beforehand. The doctor may recommend that you take Xanax or another anti-anxiety medication early in the day. You should also bring a support system with you such as a close friend or family member and take a few calming breaths.
Learning what to do before and during your surgery can help you feel more confident about getting the dental implants that you need.
